I Wear My Flash Drive Like It's Jewelry

Today one of my students asked me if I was single. Then he asked if I was 31, 21, or closer to 16.

Another girl came in late and said explicitly, "I'm not here to learn." I think I freaked her our when I called her over to talk and catch her up on the papers from yesterday and that's all. It looked like she expected a lecture. It's certainly going to be challenging, but I do have a lot of sweet kids.

Talked about malleable intelligence today with one of my classes- they're so into it! It was so much fun. They'd never heard about brain-growth-research before. It was great to see them so enthused.

Tomorrow I'm going to show them heart-wrenching graphs comparing their school's test scores to those of one of the top-performing parishes (counties) in Louisiana. We're going to do lots of pump-you-up stuff relating to malleable intelligence and the 4-minute-mile story to start laying down our goals to get serious about scholastic success.

It's going to take a lot of work. But I'm excited... more energized, in fact, than I was yesterday. Hell, it's 9:10 and I'm still rocking! (In getting-adjusted-to-teaching-speak "rocking" means: in five minutes I'm going to stop working/watching the Olympics and start getting ready for bed.)

How lucky I am.

Dear Carrie,

Thanks for posting your "teacher blog." We will all be learning from you this year.

You are amazing! Aunt Jeanne
