(Knock on wood.)
The first day of school has come and gone. Only mild attitudes showed their faces today- and most of my classes were mostly silent. Everyone figuring each other out. (I saw one of my best students from last year nervously look around before sheepishly raising her hand when I asked who loved to read. Can't underestimate the importance of coolness in seventh grade.)
The honors class I have was the most chatty. I have a couple of adorable autistic students who have some great things to say. ("In other words, Ms. Craven, you mean just get out all the immature behavior before you enter the room.") And there's a new TFA recruit at our school, who makes me feel great because I get to be helpful. And feel- just a little bit- that I know what I'm talking about.
It's pouring outside. The tropical storms are a-brewing, and a few of us are going to see Mos Def tonight across the river.
Here's to year two.

Sounds like a good start. I think you're dreaming, if you think 7th graders are capable of leaving their immaturity outside the classroom door! But, good luck! :)
Good luck! Those kids are lucky to have a kick ass teacher like you!
